The garden of promises

Aaron had always believed that love was like a garden—something you had to nurture, care for, and grow over time. When he met Lily at a local farmer’s market, she was buying seeds for her balcony garden. She was vibrant, with a laugh that felt like sunlight breaking through the clouds. Aaron was immediately drawn to her.

“Are you a gardener?” Lily asked when she caught him staring at the packets of seeds in her hands.

“I’d like to be,” he replied, though his gardening experience was limited to a dying fern in his apartment.

That was the beginning.

Their love story blossomed as they built a life together. Aaron and Lily decided to create a garden in the backyard of the small house they rented. It became their sanctuary, a place where they planted flowers, vegetables, and dreams. They spent weekends digging in the soil, hands covered in dirt but hearts full of joy.

“This will always be ours,” Lily said one evening as they sat beneath the stars, surrounded by the fragrance of blooming roses. “No matter what happens, this garden will remind us of our love.”

Aaron smiled and kissed her, believing her words with all his heart.

---

But as the seasons changed, so did Lily. Aaron noticed her growing distant, spending more time away from home. She began to miss their gardening weekends, citing work or vague commitments. Aaron tried to bring her back to the sanctuary they had built, planting her favorite flowers and planning picnics in their backyard, but she always had an excuse.

One evening, Aaron found her sitting in the garden, staring at the ground. “Is everything okay?” he asked gently.

Lily hesitated before saying, “Aaron, I don’t know if I can do this anymore.”

“Do what?” His voice cracked.

“This. Us. I feel...trapped. Like I’m losing myself in this life we’ve built.”

Aaron’s heart sank, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he begged her to take time to think before making any decisions.

---

A week later, Aaron came home early from work to surprise Lily, only to find her in the garden—but she wasn’t alone. She was with another man, their laughter filling the air like a cruel parody of the joy they used to share. Aaron froze, his world crumbling around him.

When Lily noticed him, her face turned pale. “Aaron, I can explain,” she stammered.

But there was nothing to explain. The betrayal was written in her eyes and in the way she stepped away from the other man as if distance could erase what had happened.

Aaron didn’t yell or accuse her. Instead, he simply said, “Why here? In our garden?”

Lily had no answer.

---

Lily moved out a week later, leaving Aaron alone with the garden they had created together. For months, he couldn’t bring himself to tend to it. The flowers wilted, the vegetables rotted, and the once-vibrant sanctuary turned into a graveyard of broken promises.

But Aaron couldn’t let it go. One day, he picked up his tools and began working in the garden again, trying to revive what they had built. It became his way of coping, his therapy. He told himself that if he could save the garden, he could save a piece of himself.

Months passed, and just as the garden began to bloom again, Lily returned.

“I’m sorry,” she said, standing at the gate. “I made a mistake. I thought I needed something else, but all I ever needed was you.”

Aaron wanted to believe her. Against his better judgment, he let her back into his life. They began rebuilding their relationship, starting with the garden.

---

But the cycle repeated. Lily grew distant again, leaving Aaron to care for the garden alone. Each time she left, Aaron forgave her, hoping this time would be different. Each time, she returned with more apologies and empty promises.

The betrayals chipped away at Aaron’s spirit. He stopped seeing the beauty in the garden and began seeing it as a monument to his pain.

One rainy evening, Aaron sat beneath the oak tree in the center of the garden, a bottle of wine in his hand. He stared at the roses Lily had once planted and whispered to himself, “I gave everything to this garden. To her. But it was never enough.”

The next morning, his neighbor found him lifeless beneath the tree, a bottle of sleeping pills beside him.

---

Lily heard about Aaron’s death weeks later. She returned to the house, now abandoned, and found the garden in full bloom. It was as if the flowers were mocking her, thriving while the man who had loved her so deeply was gone.

She spent hours sitting in the garden, surrounded by the evidence of Aaron’s love. She realized too late that she had been running from her own fears and insecurities, and in doing so, she had destroyed the one thing that had been pure and true in her life.

For the rest of her days, Lily tended to that garden, trying to keep alive the love Aaron had poured into it. But no matter how much it thrived, the garden could never fill the emptiness he had left behind.
